FYRISH - the place FYRISH – ORIGIN OF THE NAME FYRISH is the name of a hill in Ross and Cromarty (Cromerty) which has a commanding position, near Evanton overlooking the Cromarty Firth and which is close to where Marjorie Paterson of the band FYRISH was brought up in the Black Isle. The hill has a monument at the summit, constructed in 1783 by Sir Hector Munro of Novar who was a Commander of the British Forces in India. His most famous victory there was at Negapatam. When he returned home he provided work for destitute local people following the Highland Clearances and one of his projects was the construction of the monument on FYRISH which is a replica of the gates of Negapatam.
