Victor Jara
"Victor Jara was a teacher, poet, theatre director and popular folk singer and songwriter who, as part of the "New Song" movement, advocated revolutionary cultural and political change under Salvador Allende's democratic government. Allende's power was short-lived, however, and in a 1973 military coup, backed by the US Government, thousands of his political supporters were rounded up into stadium buildings, where they were tortured and murdered. As a prominent musician, his captors reserved particular attention for his guitarist's hands, which were mutilated before his death. He was 38 years old. More than 35 years after the event a 53 year old former soldier has been charged with his murder." ................ Karine Polwart

Get the Lowe down on north east ambassador Jez's songs

Published Date: 17 April 2009

JEZ Lowe is one of the folk scene's busiest performers.

He is constantly on tour, both solo and as leader of his band, The Bad Pennies.

And he still finds time to write memorable songs and act as a musical ambassador for the north east.

Among those who have recorded Lowe's songs, are Fairport Convention, The Dubliners, The Tannahill Weavers, Cherish The Ladies, Liam Clancy and Bob Fox.

Songs like Back in Durham Gaol, The Bergen, Greek Lightning and These Coal Town Days are now classics.

He has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including the main stages at Edmonton Festival in Canada, Denmark's Tonder Festival, The Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian in the US, Port Fairy and Byron Bay Festivals in Australia and at concerts and festivals in New Zealand, Hong Kong, Ireland, Holland, Germany and Spain

In 2006 Jez participated in a hugely successful series for the BBC, entitled The Radio Ballads, composing 23 new songs, many of which are already finding their way into the repertoires of his peers, and also formed the basis of a new album for Jez himself Jack Common's Anthem.
The Radio Ballads went on to be honoured with two Sony Radio Academy Awards and earning a nomination as Folksinger of the Year in the 2008 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for Jez himself.

Most recently he collaborated with Karine Polwart, Stu Hannah, Emily Smith, Mark Erelli and others on songs for the Darwin Song Project, featured on BBC radio. He is at the Worb, at thel, E tomorrow. Guests on May are
